Trudy Carter is the creator of Beg For More and specializes in whipping up healthy, homemade dog treats. It’s a hobby that has blossomed from her home into a bakery and pet store.
“I started doing it at home for my dogs and I began sharing it around,” said Carter.
She explained that once friends began giving their pets her treats, the dogs refused all other dog biscuits and would beg for more of Carter’s creations.
To support her baking, Carter said she realized she needed something to sustain her before committing to the pet bakery idea.
She opened her pet store, Paws-n-Shop, in Gander and has transitioned to fulfilling her passion.
“I just want to make something that is safe,” she said. “I try to go out and find fresh. I don’t make big batches since I’m not using any preservatives. You wouldn’t eat cookies two weeks later yourself.”
Carter has gone afield to better understand her baking, having spent time in Wisconsin where she got to listen to a nutritionist speak about a dog’s nutritional requirements.
“He told me about things that I should or shouldn’t do,” she said.
In addition to biscuits, Carter also prepares dog cakes and cool summer treats, always exploring recipes and flavours.
Some recipes fare better than others.
“We’ve got our regulars coming in looking for their favourites,” said Carter.
She’s even experimented using lentils but admitted that it gave the biscuits a weird texture.
When asked if the dogs notice they difference, Carter gave a knowing nod.
“Yes, yes they do,” she said.
For now, Carter is continuing to experiment with recipes for her treats but said her business is driven by passion.
“I love it,” she said. “I hope to keep growing it.”
