OTTAWA – Canada exported $312 million more in fish and seafood products in 2017 than it did the previous year, representing an increase of five per cent.

Total sales for the year were approximately $6.9 billion, according to a news release from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) on March 9.

China and Japan were responsible for most of the export growth. An additional $194 million went to China, a 25 per cent increase from 2016, while exports to Japan grew by $40 million, 13 per cent higher.

Much of the fish and seafood exported by Canada goes to the United States. Exports there were steady in 2017 at $4.3 billion.

Canada's top three exports by species in 2017 were lobster ($2.1 billion), snow/queen crab ($1 billion), and Atlantic salmon ($909 million). Canada exported fish and seafood products to 137 countries last year.
