CARBONEAR, N.L. — The Town of Carbonear is open for business, no matter the number of applications coming before the Conception Bay North community.

That was part of what Coun. Danielle Doyle had to say during the Tuesday, April 9 council meeting while presenting a development committee report.

In the report, which stemmed from a March 28 committee meeting, Doyle discussed correspondence the town received from a business owner concerning new businesses the town was issuing permits for.

“The (economic development and tourism officer) is going to report back to (the writer) that the Town of Carbonear approves most applications as long as they meet our municipal plan and all the regulations,” said Doyle, who chairs the development committee. “But we don’t restrict the number of any type of businesses within the town, because that would certainly indicate that the town is closed for business, and we don’t have any control over that.”

The Compass requested a copy of the correspondence received, but because it was tabled at a committee meeting, it is considered privileged. Town CAO Cynthia Davis reiterated what Doyle stated at the public meeting and also told The Compass in an email the town has the authority to add conditions if necessary when issuing a business permit.
