One of the first items on the agenda today was to choose a president, and Ryan Cleary — former journalist and former NDP Member of Parliament — was named to that position.

Other members of the executive of the new organization are: Richard Gillett, vice president; Joanna Ryan-Guy, secretary; Jason Sullivan, representative of the under-40 fleet.

A representative for the over 40 ft fleet will be determined later today.

The FISH-NL convention, which is going on all day in Gander, aims to begin a certification process that could see fish harvesters break away from the Fish Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) to join this new union.

More coverage from the convention to come.
