Boyd Cohen, 88, grandson of original owner and founder of Cohen’s, made the trek from Grand Falls-Windsor to St. John’s on Friday to help mark the 100th. anniversary of Cohen’s Home Furnishings Limited in the province.
Simon Cohen, an English immigrant, opened the first Cohen’s general store in Grand Falls Station, now Grand Falls-Windsor, in 1919 following the end of the First World War.
In 1953, Boyd Cohen, Michael Cohen’s son, joined the firm and began importing railroad cars full of furniture from across Canada and the United States creating the furniture and appliance store as it is mainly known for today.
In 1985, Boyd Cohen sold the chain to Charles R. Bell Limited, a family-owned Newfoundland firm.
Randy Bell, chairman of Bell Holdings Limited, recently retired as owner/operator of Cohen’s, his children Ruth Bell-Steinhauer and Tim Bell are now the owners of Cohen’s Home Furnishings Limited.
