ST. ANTHONY, NL – The federal government has awarded a contract to refurbish the Canadian Coast Guard’s building in St. Anthony to St. John’s-based Enercon Builders Inc.

Funding for the $1.1 million contract will come from the Oceans Protection Plan, according to a news release from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The facility is being repurposed from a marine communications and traffic services site into a search and rescue lifeboat station.

The project will include interior mechanical and electrical renovations as well as some exterior work.

The lifeboat station will result in a better response to marine emergencies in support of the communities in the northernmost areas of the Great Northern Peninsula, the release stated.

“The residents of Newfoundland and Labrador will be well-served with this increase in marine response capacity, based out of St. Anthony, and I am pleased that we are now taking this first step that will see the creation of the coast guard search and rescue lifeboat station in this region,” Long Range Mountains MP Gudie Hutchings said.

Seven new lifeboat stations will be opened in strategic locations under the Oceans Protection Plan, including two others in Newfoundland and Labrador, one in the Twillingate area and the other in Old Perlican. The four others are located in British Columbia.
