ST. JOHN’S, NL – More representatives have been appointed to the environmental assessment committee tasked with helping complete an environmental impact statement (EIS) for Grieg NL’s Placentia Bay salmon aquaculture project.
The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment announced the two additions in an environmental assessment bulletin on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
They include representatives from the salmonids section of the science branch with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and Transport Canada.
In addition to those appointments, the committee now features representatives from DFO’s aquaculture management section; Health Canada; Environment and Climate Change Canada; the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation’s tourism project development; the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment’s environmental assessment, pollution prevention and water resources management divisions; and the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources’ aquaculture development and aquatic animal health divisions, and forestry and wildlife branch.
Grieg NL was advised on Nov. 8, 2017 that an EIS would be required for the project, which includes a salmon hatchery in Marystown and 11 sea cages in Placentia Bay.
