ST. ANTHONY, NL – An environmental assessment committee is now in place for the project by Great Northern Port Inc. to develop a marine port at Crémaillère Harbour south of St. Anthony.
Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce advised the company an environmental preview report will be required for the project on Jan. 24.
The committee will provide Joyce with scientific and technical advice and will prepare guidelines for conducting the EPR.
Great Northern Port Inc. is proposing to construct the marine port to meet onshore and offshore logistics requirements as well as military and coast guard needs. It hopes to begin the first of three phases of construction in 2020.
Provincial representation on the environmental assessment committee includes the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment’s environmental assessment division, pollution prevention division and local governance and planning division; the Executive Council’s Women’s Policy Office; The Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation’s Provincial Archaeology Office; the Department of Transportation and Works’ highway design and construction; and the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources’ natural areas program and wildlife division.
The federal government has representatives from Fisheries and Oceans’ fisheries protection program, and Environment and Climate Change’s environmental protection operations on the committee.
Additional information the company is required to provide in the EPR includes the impact of the project on marine life; the numbers and distribution of other wildlife species; activities and operations associated with the ballast wastewater/bilge disposal facility, the graving dock, and the bulk ore loading/offloading storage facility.
