Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from an Atlantic Provinces-wide investment by J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) over the next three years.
The company announced on Thursday it has forecasted 7,500 new fulltime hires and more than 2,500 student hires in the region from 2019-21.
Those projects see 550 full time jobs and 227 student hires for Newfoundland and Labrador
These forecasted hires are the result of anticipated retirements, normal workforce turnover, new growth and students.
Kent Building Centres, Atlantic Towing and Midland Transport are the N.L. leaders in the new forecast and company officials say it takes great partners to make it happen.
The new hires will come from programs at Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic and the Marine Institute.
A total of 89 per cent of all new hires will be locating in Atlantic Canada and will add to the projected success shown in the past year alone.
“When we look at our three-year forecast from 2019-2021, 89 per cent of the jobs we need to fill are in the Atlantic Provinces,” Colleen Baxter, vice-president of human resources at J.D. Irving, Limited said in a news release Thursday.
“Seventy-two per cent of the jobs are in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia alone,” she added.
Across the organization, the areas with the highest number of job opportunities include operations, shipping, supply and logistics, retail sales and finance.
The three-year forecast is a result of anticipated retirements, business growth, and normal workforce turnover.

Nearly 1,000 full-time employees were added by year-end in 2017 that supported 424 indirect and induced jobs. This generated $87 million in employment income and an additional $35 million in the purchase of goods and services from N.L. suppliers.
As Irving recruits its workforce of the future, it is also working with great partners — local universities and community colleges by reaching out to co-op programs, case competitions, scholarships and career fairs.
