CARBONEAR, N.L. — It’s been just over a year since the Town of Carbonear put its final stamp of approval on amendments necessary to pave the way for a boutique hotel development in Crocker’s Cove, but there’s little sign of activity in the area.

At the Tuesday, April 9 council meeting, a small update was provided on the status of the project, which would involve a three-level luxury boutique hotel with upwards of 50 rooms plus a bar, restaurant conference centre and other amenities.

Coun. Danielle Doyle reported on a March 28 development committee meeting, during which town CAO Cynthia Davis reviewed an email received from Janet Whittle-Bailie, one of the project’s developers. Doyle said Whittle-Bailie plans to move forward with the development, but is engaged in negotiations with a property owner to purchase a parcel of land needed for the project to proceed.

Doyle reported a similar issue was delaying the project at two council meetings in November of last year.

In an interview with The Compass last February, Whittle-Bailie said the next step for the project would be to have an architect draw up a more detailed design for the hotel. Road access to the property was cited as an additional issue to be dealt with before applying for a building permit.

Bailie-Whittle could not be reached for comment prior to The Compass’ print deadline.
