A new research chair is being established at the Marine Institute in St. John’s.

Serge Buy, chief executive officer of the Canadian Ferry Association, based out of the nation’s capital in Ottawa, was on hand at Memorial University’s Marine Institute (MI) campus in St. John’s Wednesday afternoon to announce details of the establishment of the $695,000, five-year industrial research chair in the School of Maritime Studies at the MI.

The new chair will allow for the MI to expand its research capabilities into technologies used on marine passenger vessels, recruit elite researchers and develop new academic programming in the field.

Yet to be appointed, the chair, along with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, will conduct research related to new marine technologies and how they can benefit the marine passenger transportation industry.
