According to LFUSC general manager Gilbert Linstead, the new facility will have state-of-the-art processing technology, prepared in anticipation of the returning cod fishery.
Linstead says LFUSC is hoping to start construction on the new facility as soon as the necessary documentation is in place, and they identify the proper building and how it needs to be built.
He adds it will take some time to get the land prepared and the building supplies ordered.
LFUSC is hoping the facility will be fully developed over the next three to four years, and that it will become the mainstay of a prosperous cod fishery.
The old crab facility was made obsolete with construction of a new crab plant in 2014.
Linstead says it was dilapidated and, in some places, unsafe.
The new salfish facility will be located a couple of hundred feet from the new crab plant and will be easily accessible from the landing wharf, Linstead says.
