Newfoundland Power is one of several Fortis-owned utility companies that is receiving an award from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for its efforts to restore power in the Turks and Caicos Islands, which were devastated last year by hurricane Irma.

The Emergency Assistance Award is presented to companies that provided outstanding assistance to the customers and other electrical companies that were affected by hurricane Irma.

The Caribbean region was devastated last fall when a series of hurricanes, including Irma, hit many of the small island nations, including the Turks and Caicos Islands. FortisTCI, the Fortis utility provider on the islands, was severally affected by the hurricanes.

A news release from Fortis stated its emergency response team was among the first to land in the country after the government gave the all-clear. Arriving on Sept. 10, 2017, a team of about 250 people from several Fortis companies began a 60-day push to rebuild and restore kilometres of electrical lines in order to restore power to the islands.
