HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NL – A project to construct and operate a temporary soil bioremediation facility near Happy Valley-Goose Bay has been registered with the provincial government for environmental assessment.
Nordlys Environmental is proposing to locate the facility on South Branch Road, off Highway 520, about 10 kilometres from the town and located within its municipal planning area.
Hydrocarbon-impacted soils excavated from the survival tank farm site at Canadian Forces Base 5 Wing Goose Bay would be treated at the facility.
According to an environmental assessment bulletin from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment, soils from the survival tank farm site are presently being treated at an approved treatment area at the base. Some soils, however, may need more biodegradation to remediate residual contamination.
The project would include land clearing, establishment of a perimeter access route, road grading and installation of a lined soil treatment pad.
Nordlys is proposing to begin construction next month. The facility would be in operation for a little over two years – from October of this year to December 2020.
The public has until April 9 to submit comments on the project. Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce’s decision is due by April 16.
