SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton University’s Shannon School of Business will host the 49th annual Atlantic Schools of Business (ASB) conference, Sept. 27-29.
The ASB conference is one of Canada’s longest running academic business conferences which attracts about 100 academics annually from institutions from the east coast, across Canada and internationally. The conference will also welcome PhD students, MBA students and early-career researchers.
The theme for ASB 2019 is Msit no’kmaq, a Mi’kmaw word which roughly translates to “honouring all my relations.” Msit No’kmaq is regularly said as a means of recognizing the importance of relationships: relationships between people as well as the many animate and inanimate actors in our environment. At ASB 2019, a focus on relationships includes relationships and reconciliation, relationships in business schools, and relationships between partners who have helped build stronger multi-sectoral partnerships. The conference also aims to create opportunities for students to develop long lasting relationships with researchers in later stages.
Saturday afternoon’s keynote address will include Senator Dan Christmas, the first Mi’kmaw senator to be appointed to the Senate of Canada. Christmas will talk about the role Canadians play in reconciliation. Joining Christmas is Fred Bergman, senior policy analyst at the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) who will talk about the economic profile of Indigenous Business in Atlantic Canada.
The conference will kick off Friday afternoon with a doctorial consortium, guided tour of Membertou followed by a welcome reception at the Membertrou Trade and Convention Centre. Saturday evening, after a day of presentations and collaboration as well as a research excellence awards lunch, the group will take part in an event at the Fortress of Louisbourg.
