SYDNEY, N.S. — Harvey’s Restaurant in Sydney is closing but not for good.
Maureen Hart, the communications person for Recipe Unlimited, which owns the Harvey's brand, said they are closing this Harvey's location at the end of the year. In an email response to questions, Hart said they are looking for a new location within the Sydney area where they can bring the best experience to their guests.
“I don't have timing right now but we hope to open a new location as soon as possible.”
Hart wasn’t sure how long Harvey’s has been in Sydney.
The last day for Harvey's in the current location will be Dec. 15.
Bernice MacPhee of Sydney was trying to access the restaurant Tuesday morning but then discovered it didn’t open until 11 a.m.
MacPhee said she hadn’t heard Harvey’s was moving and was anxious to find out where.
"I love Harvey’s but I live on Townsend Street so It’s a bit of a walk for me,” she said, adding she doesn’t have a car.
“If they end up closer to me, I’ll be there more, for sure.”
Harvey's is a fast food restaurant chain that operates in Canada, with locations in every province. The chain is owned by Recipe Unlimited, previously known as Cara Operation. In January 2018 Cara announced they would be taking over the Keg chain of 106 steakhouses, to add to its 1,259 restaurants across North America that include Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s. In May 2018, CEO Bill Gregson announced that Cara Operations Limited would be changing its name to Recipe Unlimited Corporation.
Recipe Unlimited Corporation has headquarters in Toronto and Vaughan, Ont. The corporation not only operates numerous restaurant chains but also provides major food distribution for correctional facilities, educational facilities and other large operations.
Harvey's is the second-largest Canadian-established restaurant chain in the country behind Tim Hortons, and the fourth-largest burger chain in Canada.
Officials at the head office of Recipe Unlimited Corporation declined comment Tuesday morning, saying Harvey’s is a franchise and they don’t have any further updated information on the Sydney restaurant yet.
