It received almost 10,000 votes in the voting round of the Aviva Community Fund competition, finishing in the Top 5 in Canada for the “Up to $50,000” category and earning the market a place in the 30 finalists. A panel of expert judges looked at each idea’s sustainability, impact, likelihood of success, votes and idea originality. Fourteen other ideas from across the country received a combined total of $1 million from the fund.
In a news release, the farmers’ co-operative said the money awarded will go towards its contribution to the renovation, by the City of St. John’s, of the former Metrobus depot into a permanent community market. With this award, the co-operative has now reached its initial fundraising goal of $100,000.
“The outpouring of support from the community has been incredible,” says Joshua Smee, chairman of the market’s board of directors. “Since launching our fundraising campaign in the spring, thousands of people have chipped in with everything from an online vote to hours of their time, from one dollar to thousands of dollars. As a community cooperative, this means the world to us.”
The St. John’s Farmers’ Market currently runs every Saturday until Dec. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Club Chalet on Bonaventure Avenue.
The news release said the “Grow Our Space” fundraising campaign continues, and thanks to a partnership with the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, donations are now eligible for a charitable receipt.
