ST. LAWRENCE, NL - St. Lawrence Mayor Paul Pike has been invited to speak at the Conference Board of Canada’s conference in Montreal May 2-3.
“They’re looking for speakers to talk about how foreign investment has made a positive impact on regional economies,” explained Pike. “They’re thinking that the St. Lawrence mine would be a good example.”
The theme of the conference is: “Strengthening Canada’s Regions and innovation ecosystem.”
Pike said while speaking he would highlight the significant investment made by Golden Gate Capital to the town of St. Lawrence.
Canada Fluorspar Inc., the company that has reopened the mine in St. Lawrence, is owned by San Francisco-based Golden Gate Capital.
Pike said he would also like to highlight a Grieg NL aquaculture project, “as a foreign investment coming into (a) rural community and hopes that (it is) going to have a significant impact on the economic development and employment opportunities in the region.”
Grieg NL is the company behind a proposed Placentia Bay aquaculture project that would see the construction and operation of a land-based Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) Hatchery for Atlantic Salmon in Marystown, as well as 11 marine-based farms in Placentia Bay.
Pike explained, “We think St. Lawrence would be a good example of how foreign investment is making a real difference to the local and regional economies.”
