50-50 draw winner donates to local troop

SUNNYSIDE, N.L. — Travis Smith of Sunnyside can remember when he was a Beaver in the local group growing up, and for that reason, he decided to give back to the troop of today.

After winning the 50-50 jackpot for the First Tricentia Beavers and Cubs fundraiser, Smith gave $500 of his $1080 of winnings back to the community group.

He purchased his ticket from the Sunnyside Foodex, and the winning draw was performed by Sunnyside King Lion Ed Blackwood at the year-end lobster boil.

Amanda Drover is the Commissioner of the Tricentia Beavers and Cubs.

There are 20 children in the new group of Beavers and Cubs taking in the Trinity-Placentia region including Sunnyside, Arnold’s Cove and Southern Harbour. This is the first time there’s been a group of Beavers and Cubs in these communities in decades, she says.

“We’re doing a lot of stuff.”

They’ve been fundraising for tree planting, had a bake sale, first aid training, participating in the Cub Car rally and Beaver Buggy and camping at Camp Nor’West.

Drover thanked Smith for his generosity.

“What a wonderful thing to do for the kids, such a great person indeed,” Drover told The Packet. “From the bottom of our hearts, we truly thank Travis. Hats off to you!”

They invited Smith to their banquet to honour him for his gesture.

Drover also thanked everyone who have helped the Beavers and Cubs along their first months in existence — like the Lion’s Club, which has given so much to the group.
