Heritage NL holds plaquing ceremony for Bonavista area designated structures

BONAVISTA, N.L. —

During the week of Church Street Festival in Bonavista Heritage NL held a special ceremony to recognize several heritage structures in the historic community.

Dave Lowe, chair of Heritage NL, was on hand Aug. 31 to present designation plaques to owners of four heritage buildings in Bonavista and one in Trinity.

Fittingly held in the historic Memorial United Church on Church Street, a heritage structure and historic landmark, government representatives and the public witnessed the presentation of newly designed plaques. Each plaque features information on the the building they will be affixed to.

Bonavista now has 28 structures registered by Heritage NL, second to only St. John’s for most in the province.

The following buildings were recognized at the ceremony:

• Memorial United Church - accepted by Rev. Amanda Barnes, the church has been undergoing a multi-year restoration and recently received a Southcott Award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Trust for preservation;

• Frederick and Samson Mifflin Houses – located on historic Church Street and accepted by Liz Mifflin and Dean Holmes, the houses have been restored and currently include the Mifflin Tearoom establishment;

• The Adam Mouland Property – originally restored by Bonavista Living, the house is now home to business CapeRace Cultural Adventures;

• Frederick Harris House – owned by Paul and Carol Babineau and home to Saltbox Specialty Market, after a complete restoration of the house.

• 4 Taverner’s Path in Trinity – now fully restores as the Rosewood Suites, Michele DuRand and Paul Snelgrove own the structure for its original use many years ago.

Established in 1984, Heritage NL protects and promotes Newfoundland and Labrador’s built and intangible cultural heritage.
