Chance Cove native Stephen Hooper, 26, will be in Toronto, ON, this week for the ninth annual Child Helpline International, Nov. 6-8.
He received the invite about two weeks ago.
“It was pretty exciting. I’ve never been asked to do anything like this before,” said Hooper, who has been working as an Ambassador with Kids Help Phone for about a year.
Hooper, a noted social media presence himself, will be talking about how Kids Help Phone can collaborate with the social media community (bloggers, YouTubers, Instagramers etc.).
It’s the first time the event has been held in Canada.
Kid’s Help Phone, in partnership with Crisis Text Line recently launched their texting service in Atlantic Canada after a February trial run in Manitoba.
By simply texting TALK to 686868, kids can connect with a trained crisis responder, for free, 24/7, 365 days a year.
“It’s a great thing to have, for sure,” said Hooper, who noted that it’s another way that kids can reach out for help anonymously.
“If I see you going into the guidance councilor’s office, then I’d know something was up. Now you can text from your phone.”
The service, which is now available in newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, and Nunavut, and is expected to roll out across the country before year’s end.
