Local tribute band raising money for Canadian Cancer Society Turn: Donations in memory of Gord Downie

GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL – Courage, a local tribute band to the Tragically Hip, will be hosting a charity concert in memory of The Hip’s late lead singer, Gord Downie.

“We just want to put off a good show; we’re doing this 100 per cent not-for-profit,” said vocalist Joey Maloney.

Maloney and Greg Forward started Courage in the summer of 2016 after Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. During that summer they put off their first benefit concert for the Canadian Cancer Society in Downies name.

Since then they have grown to a full band with Maloney as vocalist, Chad Mitchell on lead guitar, Forward on bass and back-up vocals, and Cordell Bowers on drums. The band will have its first Arts and Culture Centre show in Stephenville in February.

The benefit concert in Grand Falls-Windsor will see all profits going to the Canadian Cancer Society in Downies memory.

“We have a great time doing it,” said Maloney. “I think what separates us from other people is the fact that we started doing this out of love for the music and (Gord Downie). We just want to play so people can hear (the Tragically Hip’s music) and get happy.”

The concert will be held Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 8p.m. at St. Josephs Hall. Admission is by a minimum $5-donation. The evening will include an intimate and interactive performance by Courage, as well as door prizes donated from local businesses.
