Sybil Abbott said she learned a lot of things about elder abuse during a session on it held at the Silverwood Manor in Kippens, where she resides.
She said she didn’t know about certain types of abuse, especially as it relates to things like neglect and emotional abuse, with things like “the silent treatment.”
Abbott, who is from Port au Port West, said she’s comfortable at Silverwood and that she hasn’t seen any abuse in her two years there.
With none of her family living in the area, she feels she’s in the best place she could be, and all the staff are good to her.
Abbott said her family members are all over the place, and when they visit the area they drop by to see her.
Bernice Benoit, manager of Silverwood, addressed the seniors with a focus on elder abuse. The event usually takes place on June 15, but they did it on Wednesday due to other things taking place on Friday.
Benoit encouraged the residents to never be scared to ask for help, as staff members are always there to provide assistance, and she let the seniors know some of the signs relating to abuse.
“You guys (and gals) are always Number 1 here,” she said.
Benoit encouraged the residents to say no to putting their signature to any type of document without having a lawyer on hand.
Following the address, residents participated in a fun activity and enjoyed some refreshments.
Each of the residents was provided with a SeniorsNL document that listed contact information and a referral line, toll-free, at 1-800-563-5599.
