Newfoundland and Labrador is one of three provinces presently affected by an outbreak of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce.
Thirteen cases of illness are under investigation in this province as well as five more in New Brunswick and three in Quebec.
Ten people, who became sick in November, were hospitalized as a result. No deaths have been reported, however.
There are currently no product recalls connected with the outbreak.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is working with public health officials to determine the source of the romaine lettuce that caused the outbreak.
People are reminded to follow safe food handling practices for lettuce to avoid getting sick.
Most people with an E. coli infection will become ill for a few days and fully recover. In rare cases, some infections can be life threatening.
