CARBONEAR, NL — Residents of a neighbourhood on the south side of Carbonear were fortunate local firefighters quickly responded to a brush fire late Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out at around 11 a.m. on a vacant piece of land, with the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department positioning trucks on Lower Southside Road and Churchill Circle to combat the flames.
A large plume of smoke was visible from across the harbour as firefighters descended on the area. While there were a number of homes close by, there appeared to be no damage to any structures, as firefighters were able to quickly contain the flames.
By 11:20 a.m., smoke from the fire had dissipated substantially. Firefighters remained on the scene to look after hot spots to prevent the fire from reigniting.
Wednesday’s brush fire falls hot on the heels of multiple days in a row of dry, sunny weather for the Avalon Peninsula.
