CLARENVILLE, NL—Bonavista-Burin-Trinity MP Churence Rogers is settling into his new role in the federal Liberal government after winning a byelection this past December.
Rogers was in Clarenville on Monday, Jan. 15 for an announcement on providing funding for internet service in remote and rural communities in the area.
He told the Packet he’s already set up his office in Ottawa and plans to have the staffing situation sorted by Friday, Jan. 19.
As for the offices in his riding, the main central office will remain in Clarenville, while there will be two satellite offices with one employee each in Grand Bank and Centreville-Trinity-Wareham.
He says further official details on how to get in contact with these offices will be made public in the coming weeks.
Rogers said he wants to ensure his new offices are all completely accessible. Buildings housing his offices must accommodate anyone who wants to enter, with services such as ramps and automatic door-openings in place.
In other areas of work, Rogers says he’s getting acclimated.
“I’ve very much been involved in many of the key issues I’ve heard during the election,” he told the Packet. “I’ve been raising issues with ministers and chiefs of staff in Ottawa related to the fishery, industry like offshore oil and gas, tourism and others that people raised concerns about.”
He adds he’s been meeting with provincial ministers, people at the local level and other organizations as well.
Rogers had planned to head to the western part of the province as part of the Newfoundland and Labrador federal caucus to lend support, meet with provincial ministers and survey damage after major flooding in the area over this past weekend.
