New affordable housing is expected to open up for St. Anthony and area seniors later this year.

According to St. Anthony Mayor Desmond McDonald, construction is proceeding as planned on 10 two-bedroom units for the St. Anthony Non-Profit Seniors Housing Complex.

“Everything seems to be on schedule,” he told The Northern Pen. “Like any project we’ve had issues we’d had to deal with, we’ve dealt with them and we’ve moved forward.”

He expects the facility to be completed and ready to open by the fall of 2018.

The town of St. Anthony had long identified a need for more affordable seniors’ housing in the community and surrounding area.

After seeking and failing to attain private investment, the town council decided to undertake the project itself.

It applied for funding in 2017 and the town received $1.25 million from the federal and provincial governments to construct the units located on Ollerhead Drive.

The funding was allocated as part of investments in non-profit sector affordable seniors’ housing projects.

The town established the St. Anthony Non-Profit Seniors Housing Complex committee and construction started in June of this year.

McDonald expects the application process to open this month and believes there will be a high demand.

It will be open to seniors in St. Anthony and area.

The committee will have a criteria to determine who will be eligible to occupy the homes.

Applications will be available to fill out at the town hall and online on the town’s website and Facebook page.
