Construction for Gander’s new waste water treatment facility is underway.
While prep work has been ongoing since funding was announced in February 2017, an official sod-turning ceremony took place Nov. 23, as construction of the sewage treatment plant is about to begin.
The $35-million, trilaterally funded project between the town, and both federal and provincial governments, will see the plant located southeast of Whitman’s Pond, off of Gander Bay road. Construction is expected to conclude in November 2019.
“This is a big day for the Town of Gander, as we have been excitedly awaiting the commencement of the biggest project the town council of Gander has ever undertook,” said Mayor Percy Farwell, in a press release issued the day of the sod-turning. “Council is proud to invest in a new and improved wastewater treatment system that will meet federal standards.
“We are thankful to the federal and provincial government for working with us to strengthen the Town of Gander’s economy, protect the environment and improve the quality of life of our residents.”
