HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. —
A 51-year-old Happy Valley-Goose Bay man has been arrested on a charge of possession of child pornography. Val Oliver appeared in court today and was released on bail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 10.
According to a press release from the RCMP, on September 26, 2018, the RCMP/RNC Integrated Internet Child Exploitation (IICE) unit received a complaint from the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC) regarding the transmission of child pornography.
On Feb. 21, the IICE unit, with the assistance of Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP and officers from the Criminal Intelligence Services Newfoundland and Labrador (CISNL), executed a search warrant at a residence in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. According to the RCMP, child pornography was found in the home.
Oliver, a former communications manager with the Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs office in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, is also facing an unrelated charge of sexual assault. He is scheduled to go to trial on that charge on April 10 as well.
Oliver owned a local media company, Val Media, which also took school photos on the north coast of Labrador in 2018 and was a former communications director for Labrador MP Yvonne Jones.
