ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A host of car clubs, known for their community spirit, will be front and centre at the 2nd annual Jake’s Show ’N’ Shine set for Aug. 24 in Dunville.
Jake Griffiths, a car enthusiast, and his father, Ray, are organizing this family friendly event that will be held on the Dunville Ball Field from 12-5 p.m. in support of the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (ASNL).
“I am stoked they are coming to this area again,’’ Jake said about all the car club participants.
“I love Rat Rods and I am hoping to save up enough money to own a ’32 Ford that I can put in shows like this,’’ he added.
This car show is all about families spending the day together in support of ASNL.
Participants can meet passionate car owners, play games, take a chance at winning $5,000 in the event’s 50/50 draw, enjoy a barbecue pit hosted by Jake and much more.
A total of 147 cars participated last year and organizers hope they can exceed that total for 2019, and surpass the $15,000 raised.
To help foster this challenge, it has been rumoured Rick Hickey, president of the Firebird Club, will donate his services to be part of a dunk tank.
“I hope other car clubs may be able to convince somebody to take part as well. Maybe a challenge to see which of them can raise the most money,’’ Griffiths said.
“From what I understand, groups like the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club, of which I am a member, the NL Firebird Club, NL Mustang Club and the Camaro club will all be taking part. If one person from each of those groups is available for the dunk tank, we can have some fun.’’
A new addition to this year’s event is motorcycles, and a host of those are expected to be on display, including a 1952 BSA that has just been restored and will be part of the show.
Anyone with vintage a motorcycle or those with a bike they would like to display can take part.
“This is a great family friendly event and we hope anyone who is looking for something to do can come out in support of the show and the Autism Society,’’ Jennifer Brown of ASNL said.
Brown said registration begins at 8 a.m. and will continue through to 11 a.m. Participants will be assigned spots for displaying their vehicle at the ball field and setup will continue from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., when the field opens to the public for the afternoon.
There will be a host of activities happening around the ball field, including the barbecue pit, a visit by mascot Piston Pete and a host of his surprise guests.
“Jake also applied for a grant and got it. He used the money to rent three bouncy castles for the day,’’ Ray said.
Tickets are now available for sale at $5 each for the 50/50 draw and they can be purchased online at Jake’s Show ’N’ Shine Facebook page by e-transfer to [email protected]. Tickets are also available at the Elaine Dobbin Centre for Autism, Bill’s Barbershop, Neville’s Central Store, Dunville North Atlantic, Harold Hotel and The Tax Shelter/Donna Lambe.
Two thousand tickets have been printed and if all are sold, up to $5,000 will be available in winnings.
