LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — Labrador City Mayor Wayne Button has resigned. He announced his resignation, effective today, May 22 via a message on Twitter.

“Fellow community members and friends, I speak to you now with an open heart. I love this town, the people that make our town and am very passionate about making it a better place to live. Since I was elected my goal has been to serve and improve this community for the people,” the message read.

Button said it was a difficult decision but was in the best interest of the town, his wife and family that he resign. He asked that the media and constituents respect his privacy.

The town also issued a release regarding Button’s resignation. The release said Labrador City Council will hold a meeting in the next few weeks to hold a vote to appoint a mayor and hold a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

Button was elected in 2017 to the role and also serves as Chair of the Labrador Grenfell Health board. Button said he will continue in this role and as a chiropractor in Labrador City.
