The provincial NDP party leadership is no longer a solo race.
Economist Alison Coffin announced she is officially running for the leadership of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party.
St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers had been the only person in the race up to Coffin’s announcement.
“People from all over the province encouraged me to run,” Coffin said in a news release Thursday. “And I agree with them it’s time for a fresh approach to the party’s – and the province’s – direction. I have 25 years of experience as a working economist. I’m committed to the party’s values. I know what we need to do, and I’m willing to work hard to get it done.”
Coffin said she will file her nomination papers with the party next week
According to her biography, Coffin has developed policy and strategic plans for the provincial government, taught at Memorial University, and consulted on public policy, pension plans and the provincial budget. She is currently executive officer of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association.
She also ran a consulting company.
Coffin splits her time between St. John’s, Brigus and Spaniard’s Bay with her partner Ian.
She ran for the N.L. NDP in the 2015 election, and is currently associate president of the provincial party.
The new leader will be named during the NDP leadership convention, April 6-8 in St. John’s. So far, Rogers is the only candidate in the race.
Former NDP leader Earle McCurdy stepped down in September and Lorraine Michael has since held the reins as interim leader.
