It seems whatever caused the fire that destroyed Hickey and Sons fish plant in O’Donnell’s last week will remain a mystery.

But investigators have determined there was nothing criminal about it.

The blaze, which broke out at close to 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 26 in the small community near St. Joseph’s, completely gutted the 32-year-old structure.

According to RCMP spokesperson, Cpl. Jolene Garland, the investigation has wrapped and investigators have concluded, “The fire is not suspected as having criminal elements. The cause of the fire is undetermined.”

The loss was devastating to the community, as around 80 people were employed there, several for many years.

Rose Fagan of St. Joseph’s, who worked at the plant for 13 years, said everyone in the area is still in shock.

“It was an excellent place to work,” she said. “But I’m thinking we’ll be back.”

There have been reports that the owners plant to rebuild, but attempts to reach Todd Hickey and Craig Hickey have been unsuccessful
