The Gander Elementary School Council is asking the town to reconsider its decision to continue holding a Guy Fawkes Night bonfire adjacent the new school.
The group is asking the town to find another location, and to defer it until a suitable location is found. Air quality concerns were raised, and children play near the site as burning continues following the event.
The town is recommending the fire continue at its current location this fall, with the date being pushed back to a Friday night instead of a Saturday, and is asking the fire department to completely extinguish the fire before school resumes on Monday.
Furthermore, Coun. Pat Woodford said the town will be downsizing the fires to limit the flames.
