A pair of Lewisporte people are dead after a head-on collision early Sunday morning west of Gander.

According to Gander RCMP, when officers arrived on the scene around 4 a.m. on July 7, they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames and there had been a head-on collision between a pickup truck and SUV.

Gander Fire/Rescue were the first to attend the scene the scene and confirmed that a 65-year-old man from Lewisporte and a 63-year-old woman, also from Lewisporte, were deceased. The man had been driving the SUV, while the woman was in the front passenger seat.

There were two passengers in the vehicle and they were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

A 20-year-old man from Gander, who was the driver and only passenger of the pickup truck, was taken to hospital. In a RCMP release, police indicate they took a blood sample of the man to determine if he was impaired at the time of crash.

The investigation is ongoing according to police.
