ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Equinor has renewed its partnership with ArtsNL in support of the ArtsSmarts grant program and will award the Equinor ArtsSmarts Scholarship for a fifth year, it was announced Monday.
A news release notes the scholarship was established as part of Equinor’s ongoing commitment to arts and culture development in the province and is awarded to a Newfoundland and Labrador student who has chosen to pursue a post-secondary education in the arts. It supports the ArtsSmarts mission, which is to give schools and their communities a chance to enhance artistic activities.
The desire is to encourage students to develop their intellectual skills through active participation in the arts.
Applications for the scholarship will be accepted from any high school student in Newfoundland and Labrador who will commence first-year full-time art studies in a degree or diploma program at a recognized publicly funded Canadian university or college in the fall of 2019.
Equinor and ArtsSmarts will award one scholarship of $2,500. The application is available through the ArtsNL website. The deadline for applications is June 21.

“In the initial four years the scholarship has been available, thanks to Equinor, ArtsNL has managed the application process. We continue to receive strong and competitive applications from many bright and talented future professionals. This year, we look forward to once again hearing from a new class of applicants, as they embark on an exciting new chapter.”
Interested student applicants are required to complete the Equinor ArtsSmarts Scholarship application form, outline their civic engagement to date through volunteerism, internships or past work experience, and provide a letter of reference from one of their past or current arts educators. Applicants are also asked to submit an artist statement describing why they want to become a professional artist, what their academic and artistic goals are, and which artists or works they are inspired by.
Equinor has committed $20,000 to supplement the level of funding available through grants awarded under the ArtsSmarts program, as well as to continue with the Equinor ArtsSmarts Scholarship that was established in 2015.
