The Federation of Independent Sea Harvesters of Newfoundland and Labrador (FISH-NL) issued a call to candidates in the upcoming federal byelection of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity to outline their positions on major fishery issues in the riding on Friday.
“It’s time for candidates to stand up and be counted in terms of where they stand on key fishery issues in the riding and province,” FISH-NL president Ryan Cleary said in a news release.
“The answers to these questions will help constituents make the most informed decision on where to mark their X.”
FISH-NL forwarded five questions to the three candidates on Friday – Liberal Churence Rogers, Conservative Mike Windsor and New Democrat Tyler Downey.
Among them, FISH-NL wants to know is if the candidates agree with the federal government’s decision to open the cod fishery in fishing zone 3Ps on the south coast to offshore draggers.
As well, they are asking for the candidates’ opinions on open-pen aquaculture, such as Grieg NL’s proposal for Placentia Bay, compared to closed-containment, land-based fish farming.
The byelection is scheduled for Dec. 11.
FISH-NL has requested the candidates' responses by Dec. 7, which the group says will be made public.
