GAMBO, NL – Wayne Warren walks the trails of Middle Brook River in Gambo almost daily, and he’s reminding others to respect nature and keep it clean.
One day in August, he collected copious amounts of garbage at a popular fishing hole, locally known as Upper Steady.
With Middle Brook River being flanked on both sides by a walking trail, he also pointed out trash has been found along the walkways.
Warren stated considerable effort has been made by other trail users and himself to collect the waste and bring it to proper disposal bins located at both ends of this trail.
“It is a beautiful trail and is well used by locals as well as visitors,” he said. “Unfortunately, not everyone respects the beautiful surroundings and tend to discard garbage along the trail way and into the river.
Some garbage, consisting mostly of plastic, is still in the river and can be seen from various locations, “especially at the river’s mouth and where the salt water bay meet," he said.
“Almost daily we hear news stories of the amount of plastic being found in the world's oceans and found inside fish and other sea creatures. From the amount of garbage found in this small river one can see why the oceans are being turn into a garbage pit!”
