The Avalon Peninsula is getting a dump of rain but snowfall warnings are in effect for central areas of the island portion of the province today, according to Environment Canada.
Snowfall with total amounts of 15-30 cm are expected for central areas such as Gander, with lesser amounts — 5-10 cm further west, such as Deer Lake.
But on the Avalon, significant rainfall and strong northerly winds expected tonight into Thursday.
Rain showers today will give way to heavy rain this evening. The rain will taper off Thursday morning. Total rainfall accumulations of 25-45 mm are expected.
Additionally, strong northerly winds gusting to 80 km/h will develop by Thursday morning and persist throughout the day, possibly stronger over the northern Avalon Peninsula, Environment Canada said.
