It’s an extremely windy day in Newfoundland today, April 9.
Environment Canada has wind warnings in effect for most of the island.
It includes the Burin Peninsula, all of the Avalon Peninsula, Bay of Exploits, Bonavista North, Bonavista Peninsula, Burgeo-Ramea, Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity, Connaigre, Clarenville and vicinity, Corner Brook and vicinity, Gander and vicinity, Grand Falls-Windsor and vicinity, Green Bay-White Bay, Gros Morne, Parson’s Pond-Hawke’s Bay, St. John’s and vicinity, and Terra Nova.
Some areas also have blizzard warnings, snowfall warnings, and snow squall watches in effect.
According to Environment Canada, strong northwest to southwesterly winds with gusts between 100 and 130 kilometres an hour are expected over exposed areas and along parts of the coast today. The winds will gradually weaken below the warning criteria tonight.
Power was out for about an hour in Marystown this morning. Service was restored around 11:30 a.m.
Newfoundland Power’s outage centre shows there are power issues in several other areas on the island as well at present including St. John’s/CBS/Mount Pearl/North East Avalon/Southern Shore and vicinity; Whitbourne/Conception Bay North/Cape Shore and vicinity; Sunnyside/Clarenville/Bonavista Peninsula and vicinity; and Gander/Glenwood/Twillingate/New-Wes-Valley and vicinity.
