Rezone recommended
After five residents of the area of Ivan’s Road and Dwyer Street objected to proposed rezoning for multi-unit development, the developer reached out to them and only one is still expressing their opposition.
Two people have changed their minds and now support the development and the remaining two did not respond further.
As such the town’s public works and planning committee, which met Feb. 20, has recommended that council approve rezoning No. 1 and 2 Dwyer Street to low- and medium-density multi-unit residential, and rezoning Nos. 20, 26 and 34 Ivany’s Road to two-unit residential.
Coun. Mark Whiffen noted how important it is for realtors and developers to inform residents of the development potential and plans for the area.
“There’s a misconception of what a duplex is and what it can be,” he said. “It seems to be coming up more and more often.”
Development at campground
Beothuck Family Park and other campgrounds in town may be assigned a mil rate of zero after a review by the finance and administration committee, which met Feb. 22.
The committee has also recommended that council ask the provincial government to connect Beothuck Park to the Trans-Canada Highway, and promised to review requested improvements to the road.
Nominations closing
Citizens have until this Sunday to get their nominations in for Grand Falls-Windsor’s second annual Civic Awards.
Mayor Barry Manuel encouraged residents to submit the names of individuals and groups that make a difference in the community, and not only because each nomination is entered to win a $100-draw. Last year, he said, there were 86 entrants and he anticipates about the same number this year.
Nominations close March 11 and the awards will take place in May.
