The announcement of NL Building Trades Council’s commitment to Kids Eat Smart was made Wednesday at St. Edward’s Elementary in Kelligrews by trade council representatives.
Through the Kids Eat Smart initiative, which operates 248 Kids Eat Smart Clubs (KES) throughout the province, more than 27,000 meals are served to children in schools and community centres daily.
Approximately 6,100 volunteers do the legwork of the program serving the meals that cost $1 each.
“Our board has been supporting Kids Eat Smart for a number of years, and we are pleased to renew that commitment for a further four-year period. Too often many children go to school hungry, and this has a direct negative effect on their ability to learn. We are happy to support Kids Eat Smart in attempting to address this issue,” NL Building Trades Council executive director Darin King said in a news release.
“I congratulate the many volunteers who make this program a success. Without them it would never be possible,” he added.
