Marine Atlantic cancels Friday night crossings from Newfoundland, Cape Breton

Navigational buoy shifted due to high winds, ice conditions

Marine Atlantic’s ferry Blue Puttee docked in Port aux Basques. The ferry service has seen multiple cancellations — sometimes for days — as a result of more frequent extreme weather conditions.

CHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — A shifted navigational buoy in the channel to Port aux Basques harbour has caused Marine Atlantic to cancel its two ferry crossings for tonight.

Ferries were scheduled to leave from Newfoundland and North Sydney, N.S. at 11:45 p.m. Marine Atlantic is also delaying the 6 a.m. crossing of the Leif Ericson from North Sydney tomorrow morning until the matter is resolved.

The carrier says the buoy has shifted as a result of the severe weather and ice conditions in southwestern portions of the province. Without the buoy in proper position, vessels cannot depart or arrive in port.

The Canadian Coast Guard has dispatched a crew that’s expected to arrive in port on Saturday morning.

“We will continue to work with the Canadian Coast Guard to resolve these navigational challenges,” Marine Atlantic Tweeted. “We thank customers for their patience as we work to resume operations as soon as possible.”
