Marking the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Britain

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Association held the 79th annual Battle of Britain Parade Sunday in downtown St. John’s to commemorate those lost in the largest air battle in the history of human conflict. The parade involved members of the 150 Royal Canadian Air Force (North Atlantic) Wing of the RCAF Association of Canada and the RCAF Reserve Flight Torbay, along with the CLB Band. Commemoration activities also included a church service at the Anglican Cathedral and the laying of wreaths at the National War Memorial. Pictured: At left Lt.-Gov. Judy Foote reviews the parade during a march past on Water Street. What became known as the Battle of Britain took place between July and November 1940 between the air forces of Britain and Germany. The Royal Air Force pilots — determined to prevent a possible Nazi invasion — were successful in defeating the more experienced German Luftwaffe pilots. It was the first major loss for Germany during the Second World War. Ninety-four Canadian pilots fought with the RAF, including two from Newfoundland and Labrador.
