ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Almost two dozen students at Memorial University's St. John's campus have been sent for testing for possible E. coli.
On Sept. 30, Memorial’s Student Health and Wellness clinic was alerted to test results that indicated a student living in residence may have contracted the E. coli bacteria, according to information released by MUN to the university community.
Some 21 students with similar symptoms have been examined at the clinic and have been referred to Eastern Health for further testing. Of those students, 11 live in residence.
According to the university post, Memorial’s environmental health and safety department accompanied Service NL on an inspection of Gushue Hall on Sept. 30., but there were no major issues identified. The inspector stated that there is no obvious cause for concern at this time and it appears there are processes in place for food safety, MUN said.
Memorial said it will continue to work with Eastern Health and Service NL to determine the cause of the illness.
