The province’s burgeoning craft beer industry could see yet another new entrant later this year.
Saltbox Brewhouse Inc. is aiming to establish a microbrewery called the Little North Brewhouse in the town of Baie Verte.
The plan, registered with the province’s department of Municipal Affairs and Environment last week, is to set up a microbrewery producing less than 600 hectolitres annually using a five-barrel four-in-one brew system.
“We have the ability to capitalize on an emerging market with the rise of the craft beer culture in Newfoundland,” the product registration document reads.
Currently there are no breweries located between Deer Lake and Gander. Little North Brewhouse is perfectly located to fill the demand for craft beer in the White Bay, Green Bay, and Grand Falls regions.
Like most new entrants to the craft brewery scene in recent years, the proponents also plan to operate a taproom, retail area and kitchen.
The proposed location at civic address 81 on Highway 410 — directly across the street from Shoppers Drug Mart — is a former two-unit rental dwelling in the heart of the town’s commercial district, which will require renovations and an extension to accommodate the microbrewery’s planned amenities and services.
The town of Baie Verte has already given the project its stamp approval.
If everything goes to plan, construction is expected to begin in May.
