GANDER, NL – The Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) symposium got underway in Gander today (May 3).

The three-day gathering has more than 200 registered municipal leaders from across the province. Fifty per cent of those in attendance are new councillors, elected during the 2017 municipal elections.

Topics being covered during the symposium include waste water regulations and the legalization of cannabis, as well as how communities can save money given the impending increase of electric rates.

“We wanted municipalities to have a prospect of ideas of how to further their communities and to have those action items they can work on when they return home,” said MNL vice-president Sheila Fitzgerald, who is also the mayor of Roddickton-Bide Arm, on the Great Northern Peninsula.

From MNLs perspective, “It’s a great opportunity to learn from the membership and it allows us to focus on the issues that are important to them.”

To further the MNL’s voice, the presentations are being broadcast live at 104.7 FM radio in Gander, and also on internet radio.

The service, provided by Ryakuga, has traditionally covered the cultural practices and music of Newfoundland and Labrador for more than two decades.

The Beacon will continue its coverage of the MNL symposium throughout the weekend.
