NAPE members of 15 public sector bargaining units — representing approximately 20,000 workers across the province — have voted 88 per cent in favour of accepting a collective agreement with the provincial government that includes a controversial no-layoff clause.
NAPE is the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees.
“This has been a long and especially difficult round of bargaining, so we are happy to reach this stage and see this overall result,” NAPE President Jerry Earle said in a news release.
“We will now work on getting the agreements signed as quickly as possible.”
Votes took place province-wide over the past three weeks while tensions mounted as business groups denounced parts of the tentative agreement.
The individual bargaining unit results, showing percentage of votes in favour, are as follows:
Air Services 78 per cent; CNA Faculty 76 per cent; CNA Support 92 per cent; General Services 83 per cent; Group Homes 94 per cent; Health Professionals 92 per cent; Hospital Support 92 per cent; Laboratory and X-Ray 93 per cent; Maintenance and Operational Services 74 per cent; Marine Services 91 per cent; NLC 87 per cent; School Boards 88 per cent; Student Assistants 96 per cent; Ushers 91 per cent; and Workplace NL 93 per cent.
