Notre Dame Seafoods Inc. has been ordered to pay $115,000 for contravening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
The fine was imposed by the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday, Nov. 7, according to a release from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The release indicated the company pleaded guilty to one count of violating the disposal at sea provisions contained in the act.
During an inspection of the company’s fish plant in Comfort Cove-Newstead in May 2017, officers observed waste being loading in a manner that broke the conditions of its disposal-at-sea permit.
The money will be put in the federal government’s Environmental Damages Fund, which is administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada and ensures that court-awarded penalties are used for projects with positive environmental impacts, the release indicated.
The company's name will also be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry.
