Farwell took the lead early in the polls and maintained it throughout the night.
However, Cyril Abbott kept the race tight down to three final polls.
After 14 of the 15 polls were counted, Farwell had a lead of more than 350 votes. The advance poll solidified Farwell’s win.
After spending 12 years in municipal politics and 12 years away, he’s extremely humbled that voters placed their faith in him to lead the town.
“I’m very honoured, humbled and pleased with the voters’ decision,” said Farwell.
He is looking forward to sitting down with the newly elected council, and getting down to work after being sworn in on Sept. 27.
“There’s a lot of work that goes on in the Town of Gander, it’s not a one-person show,” he said. “There’s six other councillors elected here tonight, and we have to collectively get the most out of our strengths and do the best to mitigate our weakness to move this town forward.
“It’s a very exciting thing to be a part of the leadership of this community.”
